Insulation Advice For Homeowners and Rented Property
Filling the gap between the two walls of a house with an insulating material massively decreases the amount of heat which escapes through the walls. It will help create a more even temperature in your home, help prevent condensation on the walls and ceilings and can also reduce the amount of heat building up inside your home during summer hot spells. You may be entitled to a grant to help insulate your home or alternatively if you are not entitled to a grant you can get a substantial discount. Contact ALVA SURVEYORS 01253 446 935

Alva Surveyors - Energy Saving Tips
- * Fridges & Freezers. If your fridge or freezer isn't energy efficient it's costing more to run and is responsible for a higher amount of CO2. If everyone in the UK upgraded their fridges and freezers to Energy Saving Recommended ones, we could cut our energy use, saving over £700 million and the equivalent CO2 emissions of nearly 500,000 homes.
- * Boiler. About 60% of your household's CO2 emissions come from your boiler. Replacing an old boiler with a new condensing boiler will not only reduce your home's CO2 emissions by up to 1,300 kg a year, but it could also save you as much as £235 a year on energy bills.
- *Hot Water Tank. Insulate your hot water tank with a jacket - it only costs a few pounds and pays for itself within months. Fit one that's at least 75mm (3") thick and you could save around £35 a year. If every UK household that could fitted an adequate tank-jacket tomorrow, we'd save over £89 million of energy a year!
- * Kettle. Use a jug kettle with a water level gauge to ensure you only heat the amount of water you need. If every household in the UK used an Energy Saving Recommended kettle, we would save around £170 million of energy a year. This is enough electricity to power 330,000 homes for a year.
- * Curtains, Double Glazing. If your home has no double glazing, draw your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping and to reduce draughts. This can save you between £10 and £20 a year. Installing double glazing can cut your heating bills by around £135 a year as well as 720 kg of CO2 - that's 4 double decker buses full of CO2 each year.
- * Cavity Wall Insulation. 30% of the heat lost in your home can be through un-insulated cavity walls. Cavity wall insulation could save you around £115 a year on heating bills. Grants are available. If every house in the UK that could installed cavity wall insulation it would cut CO2 emissions by nearly 4 million tonnes. (Source: Energy Saving Trust)
