Renewable energy and microgeneration technology has grants available towards the cost of installing Wood Fuel Heating (Biomass). To be eligible to receive a Low Carbon Buildings Programme Grant you must use a certified installer and a certified product. Alva Surveyors will be happy to advise you on grants and technical details.

Wood fuelled heating is organic matter, not fossil fuel. The CO2 released when energy is generated from burning wood fuel (Biofuel) is equal to that absorbed during the fuel's creation. (Hence the term 'Carbon Neutral') Biofuels fall into two main categories: * Wood Fuel. This includes sustainable forest products (hard and soft wood), untreated wood products, energy crops, short rotation coppice (SRC), e.g. willow, alder. * Non-Wood Fuel. This includes animal waste, industrial and biodegradable municipal products from food processing and high energy crops, e.g. rape, sugar cane, maize. Small-scale domestic applications of wood fuel usually takes the form of woodpellets, wood chips and wood logs.
There are two main ways of using wood fuel to heat a domestic property efficiently:
* Stand-alone stoves. These can be fuelled by logs or pellets. These will have an output of around 5-11 kW. Some models of stove can be coupled with a back boiler to provide water heating.
* Boilers connected to the central heating and hot water systems. These are suitable for pellets, logs or chips, and are generally produce around 15 kW.

The Department if Energy & Climate Change (DECC) low carbon buildings programme provides grants for householders.
Grants are available for microgeneration technologies including: solar photovoltaic, wind turbines, small scale hydro, solar water heating, heat pumps and bioenergy.
The programme will also fund renewable CHP, micro CHP and fuel cells. Please contact Alva Surveyors for more information about these grants.

Contact Alva Surveyors for more information about grants for renewable energy, to arrange a survey or to discuss how we can help you to reduce your energy bills.

In England and Scotland, changes to permitted development rights for renewable technologies introduced on 6th April 2008 and 12th March 2009 respectively, have lifted the requirements for planning permission for most domestic microgeneration technologies.
